Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is present in skin and cartilage. Natural hyaluronic acid in the skin depletes as we age. Once injected, dermal fillers provide support and structure to the skin, giving a plumped and youthful appearance. The semi-permanent fillers provide safe, long-lasting and natural looking results.
Dermal Fillers are a popular and versatile anti-ageing, injectable treatment that plumps, volumises and lifts the skin. This can provide structure and leaving the skin more smooth, contoured and youthful. You will notice instant results with minimal to no downtime.
Areas that can be treated:
Nose to Mouth Grooves (also known Nasal labial folds)
Mouth to chin (also known Marionette lines)
Cheeks - to lift and volumise the whole face
Chin & Jaw line - to sculpt and define
Lip Lines - to fill lipstick lines
Lip Filler - to define the vermillion border and add volume to the body of the lips.
Nose - to reshape
Tear Trough treatment to improve shadows and circles
Tonic Medical uses only the best dermal fillers available. These include Restylane, Teoxane and Fillmed . Dr Benning is fully trained to inject fillers, and a full consultation is required ahead of treatment.
Cheek and Midface Enhancement
This is the most common region of volume loss in the face. Expertly placed dermal filler in the cheek and maxillary area can lead to a lifting effect of the cheeks and restoration of a more youthful contour to the face.
Chin and
Jaw Line
Using dermal filler the chin and jawline can be sculpted to a more aesthetically pleasing shape individual to the desires of the patient.
Nasolabial Folds
Loss of fat and bone resorption particularly in this area can lead to a deepening of lines either side of the nose to mouth. Filler can soften these creases.
Marionettes
These are the lines that form at the corners of the mouth and can lead to a sad appearance.
Peri Oral Enhancement
Previously known as smokers lines, these vertical creases form around the mouth as we age.
Lips
Ageing leads to reduced exposure of the red lip. The lips also tend to become thinner and more pale. Treatment aims to restore volume and natural anatomy in a way that compliments the face of the individual.
Dermal Fillers FAQ’s

What are dermal fillers?
The most popular dermal fillers used today are made of a material using hyaluronic acid based products, such as those in the Juvéderm range manufactured by Allergan. These hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are non-permanent, meaning that they are reabsorbed into the body over time.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is found in body tissues, and it has been used safely in general medical applications for several decades.

How do dermal fillers work?
Throughout the ageing process we lose some of the skin’s essential elements such as collagen and fat. These are important as they prevent to skin becoming loose and saggy. As we age, our skin becomes thinner, pigmented and more visible lines and wrinkles start to appear. The facial bones and fat pads begin to shrink accelerating the creation of folds and deep wrinkles. This can lead to a persistently sad or angry appearance.
The dermal filler acts as a replacement for the lost fat and helps to restore our skin to its former, fuller glory. It can aid return of facial features and confidence.
The material is carefully injected into different anatomical planes of the face depending on the type of filler selected and the patient’s individual requirements. Dermal fillers are available in different thicknesses and viscosity for different areas of facial contouring. The thicker products are generally reserved for deep folds or wrinkles, whilst smoother products are used to plump out fine lines and wrinkles and lips.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are not permanent, so, as our faces and perceptions of beauty may change overtime, patients can reassess their needs.
Dermal fillers are often preferred to cosmetic surgery because of the risks associated with general anaesthetics and cosmetic surgery and their relative cost effectiveness. Results are instant: patients can see how much they like the treatment as it progresses and can request a more dramatic effect if they desire at the time of treatment.
-
Do I require a consultation?
The first step in the process is to arrange a consultation with Dr Benning who has specifically been trained in the use of dermal fillers.
At consultation you will be asked details of your medical history, current medication and discuss your requirements, expectations and suitability for treatment. Dr Benning will then be in a position to advise you on the most appropriate treatment options and make individual treatment recommendations. Not every patient is suitable for treatment and not all expectations can be met with Dermal Filler treatments, so you may be advised about a more suitable treatment to achieve your desired results.
At the consultation patients will be provided with the cost of investing in the treatment options discussed. The practitioner will provide the risks associated with injectable treatments in writing. Patients can then reflect on what has been said using written treatment information.
-
How long does the treatment take and is it uncomfortable?
Treatments generally take between 30 –60minutes. A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied if desired, prior to appointment to maximise comfort during the procedure. All filler products used also contain local anaesthetic, making the treatment more comfortable. Dr Benning is also trained in the cannula technique for filler placement, suitable for certain treatment areas, which is both safer and more comfortable. For lip filler treatments, a dental block can be used to provide
quality analgesia.
-
Will I need to take time off work?
No, there is no downtime following the procedure, although you may experience some swelling and redness which would be noticeable.
-
Are there any risks or side effects with dermal filler treatments?
Product related reactions are rare. There are some injection related reactions which may occur after any injection; they typically resolve spontaneously a few days after injection to the skin, and within a week after injection into the lips. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection site. All skin injection procedures carry a small risk of infection. After lip enhancement, lips may swell for up to a week, but this typically reduces after two to three days. You should discuss side effects and post-treatment reactions with our practitioner during consultation. Dr Benning is medically trained in dealing with any reactions to dermal filler.
-
What happens after treatment?
After your treatment you will be given post-treatment advice to take home with you. We will also arrange a follow up appointment for two weeks after your treatment so a review can be carried out.
